14th World Lithuanian Symposium on Arts and Sciences

January 12

2008

Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of World Lithuanian Symposium on Arts and Sciences which had its beginning in 1969 in Chicago, IL. Its initiators were leaders of the Lithuanian American Community, Inc. and scientists and engineers of Lithuanian descent in the U.S.

During the decades when Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union, the World Lithuanian Symposium on Arts and Sciences was held in Chicago every four years. Lithuanian scientists and artists from the U.S., Canada, South America, Europe, and even from for-away Australia came to give presentations and to enjoy the numerous cultural events featured in connection with the symposium.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Lithuania became an independent nation again. With the Iron Curtain gone, Lithuanians were once again free to travel abroad while Lithuanian from around the world were once again able to visit their homeland. The World Lithuanian Symposium on Arts and Sciences would now alternate between Lithuania and Chicago.

The 14th World Lithuanian Symposium on Arts and Sciences is coming back to Chicago this Thanksgiving weekend, November 27-30.

The goals of the 14th World Lithuanian Symposium on Arts and Sciences are:

  1. To provide an opportunity for scientists and academics of Lithuanian heritage living in many countries to come together and become acquainted with one another,
  2. To provide them with an opportunity to share their scientific and cultural achievements,
  3. To encourage them to undertake joint projects,
  4. To foster their sense of Lithuanian heritage and to provide visibility for the scientific and academic achievements of Lithuanians,
  5. To form closer ties among scientists and academics living abroad, with the Lithuanian Community, and with scientists and academics in Lithuania,
  6. To inspire Lithuanian scientists and academics living abroad to return or to relocate to Lithuania and to add their talents to the betterment of their native land or the land of their forefathers.

The 14th World Lithuanian Symposium on Arts and Sciences will no doubt be one of the most important events of 2008 for Lithuanians and Americans of Lithuanian descent. We invite you to mark the date November 27-30 on your calendars and plan to attend the many lectures, presentations, art shows, music festivals, and other cultural activities of this Symposium.
