LAC grows because we all pitch in!
Since 2003 we have grown by 7 new chapters. Six of the 7 new
chapters were founded and are headed by post-1990 arrivals from
Lithuania. LAC has grown in importance in the eyes of the Lithuanian
government which now realizes that Lithuanians who belong to LAC
stay more connected to the country of their heritage.
As
LAC grows, so do our expenses.
We support our Saturday
schools and huge festivals Song and Folkdance Festivals.
We
want LAC to do more with our youth (we organize youth internships in
Lithuania and camps in the US), we are looking for ways to assist
those in need (a recent initiative is Paguodos telefonas, a
hotline for Lithuanians desperate to talk with professionals who can
advise them about where the get assistance). We public Eglute, an
internet magazine for children and "Pensininkas", The Retiree,
for our elderly. We should grow more creative in how we welcome our
members non-Lithuanian spouses.
The members of our national
Board of Directors donate their time and expertise plus pay for
their own travel, lodging, and meals when they travel to the LAC
annual meeting to decide what the national Executive Committee must
implement during the year. (Do you ever thank your own elected Board
member for his or her civic mindedness?).
Our Executive
Committee has to pay for printing, postage, phone, website, fax, and
LAC-related travel. Executive Committee members are not paid for
the work they do. They also pay many of their LAC-related expenses
themselves. Like all other LAC member, they pay their annual
solidarity dues and give a larger, special donation at their
chapters Independence (February 16/March 11)
Commemoration/Celebration. Note: Solidarity dues are separate
from the annual special donation that goes to support the work of
the national Executive Committee.
Back in 2003, only 60
people in the whole U.S. donated $100 or more on the occasion of the
February 16/Independence commemorations to support LAC work.
Alarmed, then LAC president, the late Vaiva Vebra, suggested 100 x
100!, a call for 100 people to donate $100 or more to further LAC
work. You can see (on the right) who responded to that call. The
decision has been made not to continue listing $100 donors, but
let's continue 100 x 100 in 2012!
Those who are unable to
attend an Independence Celebration may send their donation to the
Treasurer at:
Mr. Kazys Razgaitis, Treasurer Lithuanian American
Commmunity, Inc. 2715 E. Allegheny Avenue Philadelphia, PA
