White House celebrates new members of NATO
March 29, at 3:30 pm, the White House celebrated the admission of
Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and
Slovenia as members of NATO. President George Bush addressed the prime
ministers of the new NATO members and their delegations, members of
Congress and of the Bush Administration, the press, members of the
Lithuanian American community, and other guests.
The event took place on the South Lawn of the White House.
Lithuania's membership in NATO was a priority for the Lithuanian American
Community for many years. Our members gave generously of their time,
energy, and funds to persuade NATO countries to accept the country of our
heritage under the NATO security umbrella.
Below are some fond mementos of the work involved with securing U.S.
ratification of NATO expansion and Lithuania's accession to NATO.
